What Is a REME HALO® Air Purifier, and Do You Need One?
When most people think about indoor air quality, they think about changing their air-conditioning filter. A good filter is important, but it only works when air passes through it. Many smaller airborne particles, odors, allergens, and microorganisms may continue circulating throughout the home. That is where a whole-home air purifier such as the REME HALO® may help.
What Is a REME HALO®?
The REME HALO® is a whole-home air purification system manufactured by RGF Environmental Group. Unlike a portable purifier that treats the air in a single room, the REME HALO® is installed directly inside your HVAC duct system.
As your air conditioner circulates air, the system works throughout the conditioned areas of the home. This allows it to supplement your existing HVAC filter and provide broader coverage than a typical portable unit.
According to the manufacturer, the REME HALO® is designed to help reduce airborne and surface contaminants, including:
- Dust and other airborne particles
- Mold spores
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Pet dander
- Pollen and other allergens
- Household odors
- Smoke and certain volatile organic compounds

How Does It Work?
A standard HVAC filter captures particles as air moves through the return side of the system. The REME HALO® takes a more active approach. Once installed inside the ductwork, it creates low levels of airborne oxidizers and charged ions. These are carried through the duct system and into the home while the HVAC system operates. The charged particles can cause very small contaminants to group together, making them easier for the HVAC filter to capture. The system is also designed to help reduce certain microorganisms and odors in the air and on surfaces.
Put simply, your filter waits for contaminants to reach it. A whole-home purifier is designed to work beyond the filter throughout the conditioned space.
Why Might You Need One?
Every home has different indoor air quality concerns. A REME HALO® may be worth considering if you regularly experience one or more of the following problems.
Persistent Household Odors
Cooking, pets, tobacco smoke, cleaning products, and musty areas can all leave behind odors. An air purifier may help reduce these odors instead of simply covering them with fragrances.
However, recurring musty odors should always be investigated. An air purifier cannot repair a roof leak, clear a clogged drain line, lower excessive humidity, or remove established mold growth.
Allergies and Airborne Irritants
South Florida homes remain closed and air-conditioned for much of the year. This means pollen, dust, pet dander, and other irritants may be repeatedly circulated through the HVAC system.
A REME HALO® may provide an additional layer of air treatment for households concerned about these particles. It should complement—not replace—a properly sized HVAC filter and routine system cleaning.
Pets in the Home
Pet hair is usually large enough to be captured by a filter or removed during cleaning. Pet dander and odors can be more difficult to control because the particles may be extremely small.

Concerns About Mold Spores
Mold spores naturally exist in indoor and outdoor environments. The REME HALO® is designed to help reduce airborne mold spores, but it is not a mold-remediation system. If visible growth or water damage is present, the source of the moisture must be corrected and the affected materials may require professional remediation.
Stale or Stuffy Indoor Air
A home can look clean while the air still feels stale or carries lingering odors. This is especially common in tightly closed homes, homes with pets, and properties with limited fresh-air ventilation.
Adding whole-home purification may help improve the overall freshness of the conditioned air.
Is It Better Than a Portable Air Purifier?
It depends on what you need.
A portable HEPA purifier can be an effective option when the concern is limited to one bedroom, office, or living area. A REME HALO® is intended to provide treatment throughout the HVAC system’s entire conditioned area.
A whole-home system also stays out of sight, does not occupy floor space, and does not require separate machines in every room. However, its performance depends on proper installation, airflow, HVAC operation, maintenance, and the condition of the duct system.
Does It Replace Your HVAC Filter?
No. You still need to use the correct filter and replace it regularly.
The purifier and filter perform different jobs. The REME HALO® helps treat contaminants and may make smaller particles easier to capture, while the HVAC filter physically removes particles from the air stream.
For the best results, air purification should be part of a broader indoor air quality plan that may include:
- Regular filter replacement
- HVAC and coil maintenance
- Proper indoor humidity control
- Clean, sealed ductwork
- Adequate ventilation
- Prompt correction of leaks or water damage
- Professional remediation when mold growth is present
Does the REME HALO® Require Maintenance?
Yes. The internal cell does not last forever. RGF currently recommends replacing the original REME HALO® cell after approximately 18,000 to 25,000 operating hours, commonly treated as about two years. The actual schedule can vary based on operating conditions.
The manufacturer lists a five-year warranty on the ballast and a two-year warranty on the original cell for installations in the United States. Warranty terms and product specifications should always be confirmed for the exact model being installed.
Newer models have different maintenance schedules. For example, RGF recommends cell replacement at approximately 4.5 years for the HALO-LED®. That model is also verified as zero-ozone compliant under UL 2998. Review the HALO-LED® specifications.
Is a REME HALO® Right for Your Home?
A REME HALO® can be a valuable addition for homeowners who want whole-home air treatment, better odor control, and another layer of protection against airborne contaminants. However, it is not automatically the right solution for every property.
Before installing one, the HVAC system should be evaluated to confirm that the equipment is compatible, the ductwork is in suitable condition, and the purifier can be positioned correctly. It is also important to identify whether the home’s air quality concern is caused by airborne particles or by a larger issue such as excessive humidity, duct leakage, water intrusion, or active microbial growth.
